What does it mean to be homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act?

Homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act means to "lack a fixed, regular and/or adequate night time residence."  In 1987 Congress authorized the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act to protect the rights of homeless students. Today’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides that each child of a homeless individual and each unaccompanied youth shall have equal access to the same free public education, including a public preschool education, as provided to other children and youths. It is the policy of the Hudsonville Public Schools that homeless children and unaccompanied youth shall have access to the education and other services that they need to ensure that they have an opportunity to meet the same challenging state academic achievement standards to which all students are held

What kind of services can I receive under the McKinney-Vento Act?

The goal of the McKinney-Vento Act is to reduce and/or take away barriers to the education of homeless children.  Services to remove these barriers can include:

  • free school meals

  • enrollment assistance

  • Title I level services

  • transportation assistance

  • referrals to local support agencies and social services
